What is an I-REC?
An International Renewable Energy Certificate (I-REC) is a digital certificate proving that 1 MWh of electricity was generated from a renewable source and added to the grid. The name is also written IREC.
How do I buy I-RECs in Mexico?

How many I-RECs do I need?
One I-REC per MWh of electricity you want to claim as renewable. To cover 100% of a site that consumed 2,500 MWh in a year, you need 2,500 I-RECs.
Are I-RECs accepted by RE100, CDP and the GHG Protocol?
Yes. I-RECs are recognized by leading reporting frameworks, including the GHG Protocol, CDP and RE100, for market-based Scope 2 reporting.
What is the difference between I-RECs and CELs?
CELs are Mexico’s mandatory Clean Energy Certificates for regulatory compliance. I-RECs are voluntary, renewable-only and include full project details, which is why reporting frameworks accept them. Learn more about CELs.
